Inside The YAESU FC-40 Antenna Tuner

Having recently sold my Icom IC-7000/AH-4 combo and replacing the Icom with a Yaesu FT-950, I quickly found myself greatly missing the ease of use of the Icom combo. The AH-4 is a great tuner when coupled with Icom rigs, and is compatible with the Yaesu FT857/897 when used with the BetterRF tune control.

(I did a fair amount of research before finding out that the AH-4/BetterRF would work with the early FT-950s, but due to a firmware upgrade in the later model FT-950s, that is no longer possible).

The FC-40 is the Yaesu version of the Icom AH-4. It is a coupler/tuner designed for long wire or whip type antennas and designed to interface with late model Yaesu HF transceivers.

This coupler, like the SGC models and ICOM AH-4, are typically used at the feedpoint of the antenna, as opposed to a standard antenna tuner located just downstream of the transceiver.

Per Yaesu specs, with a 2.5 meter long "whip" freq coverage should be 6m-40m and with 20+ meters of wire the range is 6m-160m. The FC-40 is rated at 100w (3 minutes max continuous transmit, ie RTTY), can be tuned with 4-60w, and has 200 memories.

In the box you have the FC-40, package of mounting bolts, 16' coax cable with PL-259s, 16' of 8 pin mini DIN male to 8 pin mini DIN male control cable, a 6 page instruction manual, a small amount of “sealing” tape, and a snap on ferrite. The ferrite is used at the radio end of the control cable. The “sealing” tape is to be used at the tuner end of the coax and control cable connectors.

The "hot" and ground side of the antenna attaches at the top insulated feedthroughs.

Requires removal of 8 Phillips screws to get to the good stuff.

Notice the lip molded into the cases and the gasket used for weatherproofing. Yaesu has pre-installed the pig tails for the coax and control cables.

This FC-40 will be used at the base of an LDG S9V 31’ vertical.

Current online pricing ranges from $299-$329.
